Getting to Melbourne Airport
If you're heading to Melbourne Airport in the evening or early morning, whether by car, taxi, bus or SkyBus, you need to allow extra time for your journey.
We have overnight lane closures and speed reductions on the Tullamarine Freeway and CityLink on most nights. We also regularly close the freeway. These will cause delays for your trip to and from Melbourne Airport.
It's essential that you plan ahead, check what's happening on the freeways and allow plenty of extra time to get to the airport.
How to find out what's happening on the freeways
There are a number of ways that you can find out about any potential impacts to your journey:
- Check this website. It has details of all ramp and freeway closures occuring in the next couple of weeks.
- Subscribe to our daily or weekly email traffic alerts. They are a simple way to get details of closures delivered straight to your inbox.
- Check our What's happening tonight page. This is a handy list of project works taking place tonight.
We also advertise significant closures, such as full freeway closures, on Facebook and in the traffic bulletins on the radio.
Always check VicTraffic before you leave
There's always the possibility of other incidents unrelated to our project, such as accidents, breakdowns and emergency works causing delays.
We recommend always checking the VicTraffic (@VicTraffic) Twitter account before you set out to see if there are any current incidents on the freeways.
Changes to Melbourne Drive
Melbourne Drive is the main connection for traffic leaving Melbourne Airport and heading towards the city.
We are upgrading the bridge on Melbourne Drive, adding a lane and building a dedicated lane for buses. While we carry out this work, we'll be reducing the speed limit and narrowing the lanes.

Occassionally we'll need to close Melbourne Drive and detour traffic leaving the airport down Centre Road and Melrose Drive. Any closures will be listed on this website.
